What is a dodo code and how do I get it?

Want to visit islands far and wide? Sounds like you need a dodo code. If you haven’t used one before, don’t panic!

We’re about to delve into all things dodo, explaining what a dodo code is and how you can get one to allow visitors to your island.

What is a dodo code?

A dodo code is a temporary 5-character code that lets you visit other players’ islands! Your dodo code will consist of numbers and letters and is for one-time use only.

Dodo codes can be used to either let people into your island (using your dodo code) or visit other islands (using their dodo code).

Once the host has decided the party’s over and everyone has left, the dodo code will expire.

In many ways, it’s like a password to your island; only the people that know about the code can enter.

Being able to visit another player’s island means you have access to different turnip prices, additional fruit choices, and the bugs, fish, and sea creatures that come with ACNH seasons!

How to use a dodo code

To use a dodo code so you can visit someone else’s island, simply go to your island’s airport and speak to Orville.

You can either choose the option for accepting visitors (keep reading to find out more) or select the “I wanna fly!” option to visit faraway islands.

Orville will ask if you want to head to an island on Local play or Online play. Choose Online play, after which you can enter the dodo code and be on your way!

How to get a dodo code in ACNH

Want to host your own island party? Get your dodo code from Orville and send it to anyone and everyone.

Remember only eight visitors can enter an island at any given time.

To get your dodo code, you need a Nintendo Switch Online membership. If you have one, speak to Orville at the airport. Tell him you want visitors and select the Online option.

You can then invite via dodo code and choose “the more the merrier” to allow anyone with the code on your island i.e not just your best friends.

You need to have played a full day in ACNH before you can invite anyone to your island, which means getting through those initial tasks for Tom Nook.

What is the four-digit code in ACNH?

Unlike the dodo code, if Orville gives you a four-digit code you’ve likely selected Local play.

Local play is used for players in your vicinity i.e same household, rather than Online where the scope is to visit islands from players far away from you (even across the world).

Local play doesn’t require a Nintendo Online membership or an internet connection, so players can meet with their friends and visit each other’s islands at no additional cost.

Why won’t any dodo codes work?

Depending on where you’ve got the dodo code from, the island you’re looking to enter might have closed their gates and you’ve missed the boat on visiting.

Equally, sometimes the host changes the code due to connection issues or other reasons. Your best bet is to refresh and hold out!

Do you have to be friends to use dodo codes?

You don’t have to be friends with a player to use their dodo code and vice versa.

You can make players your best friend by adding them on your switch, but you’ll need to have played ACNH with them once before.

If you add someone as your best friend, you can see when they’re online and message them privately with your dodo code.

However, best friends will have access to use a shovel and axe freely on your island. You should always promote players to best friend status with caution!

How to visit friends’ islands without Nintendo Online?

If you don’t have a Nintendo Switch Online membership, the only way to visit other players’ islands and let them into yours is through Local play.

To connect via Local play, speak to Orville at the airport. Whether you want to fly to another island or allow visitors on yours, whichever option you choose you’ll be allowed to select Local or Online play.

Choose Local and wait for your Nintendo Switch to find another nearby!

Dodo codes in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

These five-character temporary codes will give you access to islands worldwide, where you can fish, catch, and collect fruits and items outside of what’s native to your island.

To get and use dodo codes you need to have a Nintendo Online membership and an internet connection.

For players without a Nintendo Online membership and an internet connection, use Local play and visit the island of someone near you.
