In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, log stakes aren’t a pre-made item for sale. They have to be crafted once the player has learned the DIY.

However, you don’t need to embark on a long-winded expedition to find the log stakes recipe; the DIY will automatically land in your learned DIY roster – available through your Nookphone – during the initial stages of the game (along with other recipes to get you started). So long as you keep progressing the story by fulfilling the requirements to build your island, you’ll get your hands on the log stakes DIY.

Smug residents typically dish out the log stakes recipe, if you’re looking to get a second copy of the DIY. Equally, you can look for the recipe in a message bottle.

But, unless you’re looking to use it for trades, gifting, or decoration, there’s not much value in getting a duplicate DIY.

How do I craft log stakes?

Log stakes are pretty simple to craft, requiring only three pieces of wood which you can obtain by hitting trees with your axe. Their simplicity is partly the reason why they’re used on so many players’ islands to build a theme or aesthetic.

Once you’ve got the materials needed to craft your DIY, head to a workbench and select the log stakes recipe from the roster (you can find the recipe under the Housewares tab). Voila!

If you want to get creative with this item, you can customize it using one customization kit. For players who’ve unlocked Cyrus in the plaza on Harv’s island, he’ll also customize log stakes for 1,000 bells. The colorway options are:

  • Dark wood
  • Orange wood
  • White wood
  • White birch

What can I use log stakes for in Animal Crossing?

Aside from gifting and trading, these wood stacks can be sold to Timmy & Tommy for 360 bells.

If they’re the Hot Item for the day at Nook’s Cranny, the sell price is doubled, which is pretty good going for the three pieces of wood and minimal effort required to craft it!

You can also use log stakes within your home to gain 103 HHA points.

During the progression of your island story, log stakes are required to build your first log bridge. This is why the log stakes recipe is given so early in the game, as it’s crucial to the bridge construction project that progresses the storyline.

To build the first log bridge for Tom Nook you’ll need to craft four log stakes on top of obtaining four clay and four stones.

Missing log stakes recipe in Animal Crossing

The log stakes recipe is easily missed as it isn’t announced that your player has received it at any point in the game. If you’re not seeing it in your DIY list on your Nookphone, try going directly to the Resident Services tent workstation and craft there, as some players noted the recipe suddenly appeared in their learned DIY list.

If you’re a secondary player on an island, you may miss out on this recipe as only primary players will receive it to progress the storyline.

In this case, secondary players will need to speak to Smug villagers and find message bottles on the beach to be in with a chance of getting their hands on this DIY.

While the log stakes DIY will be automatically given to you as part of the storyline, secondary players may need to try other methods to get their hands on this versatile DIY.

Once the DIY is in your roster, you can craft it using three pieces of wood and customize its color for one customization kit per color change.

With four color options to choose from, this item can suit most island aesthetics and add a rustic charm to empty areas!
